Las Meninas
Sara Hundertmark’s Spanish 6 classes at Shawnee Mission West are currently studying the works of famous Spanish painter Deigo Velázquez, who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV in the 1600s. In honor of his paintings, each class is recreating the scene of a painting titled “Las Meninas,” which is Spanish for “The Maids of Honor,” by dressing and posing like the characters portrayed.
This activity allowed students to get a little closer to Spanish culture and helped them feel more attatched to a prominent part of Spanish history. Seth Pecina, who participated in this activity, said “it’s cool to remaster a painting.” His class’s attempt is pictured, alongside the original painting.
