Viking Baseball Prepares for Upcoming Season

Baseball tryouts are March 3.

Winter sports are approaching the end of their season. Many spring sports have been conditioning this winter to prepare for the upcoming season.

Baseball has been conditioning every day after school from 3 – 4:30 PM. The team lifts weights for the first half of practice and works on running skills and conditioning for the latter.

Tryouts begin on March 3. The week before tryouts is called Competition Week.

“Captains are selected by attendance, so the top five people with the least amount of absences are the captains for our Competition Week teams. Those captains choose their teams. We do various events to compete and build teamwork. The winning teams get some sort of prize,” Junior Tanner Adams said.

Some players have been preparing outside of school for the season. Senior Nick Banman has been working on skills at facilities outside of West and taking lessons to improve their hitting and pitching skills.

Some key members this season will be Banman, Jacob Sylvester, Alec Ober, and Matt Spellman.

“I’m looking forward to playing my last season with my friends I’ve grown up with,” Banman said. Although, this is not the end of baseball for him; he has signed to play baseball at Fort Scott Community College.

The team remains optimistic for a winning season and a place at state.
